Winning Technology: Navigation-Enabled Cortical Screw

Posted on November 9, 2016

What happens when you marry 3D printing with pre-op planning using a CT scan? Answer: a mechanical guidance system specific to each cortical screw. That, in turn gives the surgeon an ability to pre-surgically plan midline trajectories in thoracolumbar spinal fusion surgery. No complex and expensive computer navigation or robots required. With this system surgeons...

Two-Time Award Winner

The Spine Technology Award is meant to reward the most innovative, enduring and practical products to treat back pain or instability.

Mighty Oak Medical is proud to be a Spine Technology Award winner for its FIREFLY® Pedicle Screw Navigation Guide Technology.

A second Spine Technology Award was received in 2016 for FIREFLY-enabled cortical screws. Not yet FDA cleared, this product should make screw placement in a midline trajectory highly accurate.

Medical advances can’t just be innovative; they have to be cost-effective and solve existing problems. FIREFLY® does just that in the navigation realm: there are no maintenance fees, no multi-year contracts, no risk of obsolescence, no scheduling conflicts, and no upfront capital expenditures.

FIREFLY® does not require significant training, setup time or registrations/CT spins. It does not disrupt a surgeon’s typical surgical work flow. What does it do? Make navigation accessible, scalable, and easy to use.

Planning Services

FIREFLY® presurgical planning services are provided on a concierge basis and offer numerous benefits. Surgeon familiarity with deformed or altered anatomy can minimize surprises in the operating room. FIREFLY® also enables optimal implant placement by incorporating surgeon defined preferences for medial line angles and entry points into the design of the Patient-Specific Pedicle Screw Guides.

Our unique 3D planning process, which can also predetermine the screw length and diameter, is turning the art of placing pedicle screws into a highly accurate, consistent process.

The FIREFLY® presurgical plan provides a clear blueprint of which pedicle screw sizes will be used for each vertebral level, which enables the surgeon and surgical team to work in a synchronized way. The Guides are simple to use and the customized Guide tray helps to maximize the efficiencies.

Time is money in the OR, and the patient clearly benefits from a shorter surgery. FIREFLY® Guides, trays, and coordinated surgical team effort were modeled after a NASCAR pit stop.

No two spines are alike. A patient’s preoperative CT can become a three dimensional virtual spine that can be analyzed in advance of surgery. The surgeon can focus on the unique features of a patient’s spine and offer customized surgical solutions.

FIREFLY® Technology enables these solutions to be patient-specific and to be implemented in the OR according to plan.

Guides and Bone Models

The Guides are single use and autoclavable. They are custom fitted to the patient’s vertebrae and physically guide the surgeon to follow their selected trajectory so screw placement is repeatable and consistent.

Autoclavable 3D printed bone models can assist with surgical planning and patient education, and can also be used intraoperatively.

Failing to plan is planning to fail.

—Benjamin Franklin

Building a house requires a blueprint. So should spine surgery.

Our concierge presurgical planning service takes the guesswork out of screw placement.
